Blepharoplasty recovery: day by day and when you can get back to normal life

The real question is not whether blepharoplasty hurts a lot, but how long it takes to look socially presentable, when the stitches come out and when you can go back to work, wear make-up or train without straining your recovery.

The key idea

Recovery from a blepharoplasty is usually easier than many patients imagine, but there is visible swelling during the first 7 to 10 days. The practical decision comes down to this: set aside the first week properly and do not judge the result too early.

  • The first 3 days concentrate most of the swelling.
  • Stitches are usually removed around day 5-7.
  • Your social appearance improves long before the final result.

How recovery usually progresses

Days 1 to 3: this is the phase with the most swelling. There may be tightness, mild watering of the eyes and bruising around them. Scheduled cold compresses, resting with the head slightly elevated and avoiding prolonged screen time are usually recommended.

Days 4 to 7: the initial swelling goes down considerably and your appearance starts to normalise. At this stage many patients are already reading, going out for walks and doing light housework.

Week 2: the visible change is remarkable. Some residual swelling may remain, but it no longer attracts as much attention. The area is still delicate and the scar should be well protected from the sun.

Weeks 3 to 6: the eyes look fresher and more rested. The result is still refining.

5-7 daysUsual timing for suture removal.
7-10 daysIndicative window to look socially presentable.
4-6 weeksReasonable time to assess the change with more perspective.

When you can go back to work and social life

It depends on how much public exposure you have. If you work face-to-face with clients or in in-person meetings, the sensible plan is to allow a full week. If you work from home, work is sometimes resumed earlier, as long as there is no significant eye discomfort.

For social events, a useful reference is this: if you want to attend without it being too noticeable, try not to set a date before 10 to 14 days. In some cases concealer make-up helps, but it does not replace the biological time recovery takes.

Make-up, contact lenses and sport

  • Make-up: better to wait until the wound has closed and your surgeon authorises it.
  • Contact lenses: they usually need a prudent margin because the eye may be drier or more sensitive.
  • Light exercise: walking, usually soon.
  • Intense exercise: better to postpone it until the risk of bleeding and swelling has decreased.

What harms recovery most

Smoking, returning to intense sport too soon, sleeping poorly during the first days and assuming that because "I already look quite good" the internal tissue has already healed. It does not work that way. The surface improves before the inside does.

Which signs mean you should get checked sooner

After a blepharoplasty some discomfort is expected, but not everything is normal. You should seek medical advice if you develop disproportionately intense pain, loss of vision, heavy bleeding, very asymmetric and rapidly progressing swelling, fever or noticeable discharge.

If you are considering surgery, the date matters almost as much as the technique

In consultation we can estimate your social recovery time based on your skin, your job and whether the upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both are involved.

Frequently asked questions

Does blepharoplasty hurt?
It is usually more uncomfortable than painful. The typical sensation is tightness and swelling, not intense pain.
When can I go back to work?
Many patients set aside 5 to 7 days, and a little longer if their job is very visible or in person.
When does the bruising go away?
It usually improves clearly during the second week, although this varies a lot from patient to patient.
When will I see the final result?
The change is noticeable early, but the more settled result takes several weeks and keeps refining.
Will there be a visible scar?
On the upper eyelid the scar is usually hidden in the crease. On the lower eyelid it depends on the technique indicated.
