What a neck lift is and when it is better than double chin liposuction
A neck lift (cervical lift) tightens the platysma muscle and removes excess skin from the neck to restore a defined angle between the neck and the jaw. It is the right operation when the problem is laxity, not fat. Telling the two apart is the most important part of the consultation:
- Fat under the chin with firm skin: double chin liposuction is enough, a shorter procedure with less recovery.
- Vertical bands in the neck or hanging skin (turkey neck): liposuction will not correct it; a neck lift with platysma plication is needed.
- Laxity in the neck and also in the cheeks and jaw: the right option is a face and neck facelift at the same time.
The incisions are hidden behind the ears and, if the platysma needs treating, in a small cut under the chin. Afterwards a compression garment is worn for a few days, and social life is usually resumed within two weeks.

Risks and complications of neck lift
Every operation carries risks. Most complications are uncommon and can be treated, but you have the right to know them before deciding: they are part of the informed consent you will sign with Dr. Liuzza. For neck lift, the most relevant are:
- Haematoma: the most frequent complication in the first 24 hours; drained if necessary.
- Temporary weakness of the lower lip: from irritation of the marginal branch of the facial nerve; almost always recovers within weeks.
- Seroma: fluid collection under the chin.
- Irregularities or residual bands: may need a touch-up.
- Scars: behind the ear and under the chin, usually discreet.
- Numbness: of the neck and ears, temporary.
- Infection: uncommon.
How we reduce these risks
A complete pre-operative work-up (blood tests and anaesthetic assessment), surgery in an authorised healthcare centre with an accredited operating theatre, meticulous surgical technique, antibiotic and anti-thrombotic prophylaxis when indicated, clear written instructions and direct follow-up by the surgeon herself at every check-up.
