2. Active COMB registration
The Col·legi Oficial de Metges de Barcelona (COMB) maintains a public register of licensed physicians. Any patient can check that a doctor is registered, in good standing and without public sanctions. If a clinic gets uncomfortable when you ask for the registration number, that alone tells you something.
3. Honest specialisation
Nobody does everything equally well. A surgeon who has spent years on breast surgery is probably not the best option for a complex rhinoplasty, and vice versa. An honest specialisation — "this I do routinely, that I refer out" — is a sign of professionalism, not of limitation. The opposite, "I do everything, all equally well", is marketing.
4. In-person consultation without sales pressure
The first consultation should be in person, with the surgeon who will operate, without sales staff replacing medical judgement. No "discounts only if you sign today". No artificial urgency. 5. Itemised written quote
A serious quote comes in writing, with separate line items: surgeon's fees, anaesthesiologist, operating room, materials, implants with brand and model, preoperative tests, included follow-up visits. A closed, opaque total makes comparison impossible and almost always hides something.
6. Accredited healthcare facility and safety protocols
Major surgery must take place in healthcare facilities accredited by the Generalitat de Catalunya, with a fully equipped operating room, appropriate monitoring and a board-certified anaesthesiologist. Serious plastic surgery has safety protocols like any other major surgery: thromboembolic prophylaxis where appropriate, patient selection criteria, a complication management plan. Ask where the surgery takes place and who administers the anaesthesia. A serious clinic answers without hesitation.
7. Long-term postoperative follow-up
The day of surgery is not the end — it is the beginning. Serious follow-up includes scheduled check-ups throughout the first year (at one week, one month, and at 3, 6 and 12 months) and availability to answer questions during the immediate postoperative period. A clinic that stops responding with the same speed after operating is a silent red flag.
A practical question
"How do I reach you if I have a concern at 11 pm on day 4 after surgery?" If the answer is clear and specific, the follow-up exists. If it is vague, you will discover the problem once you are at home.
The red flags worth reading with a cool head
- "Only if you sign today." Any time pressure on a surgical decision.
- No in-person consultation with the surgeon before planning the surgery.
- Refusal to provide a written quote or to break down the line items.
- Lack of clarity about where the surgery is performed, who administers anaesthesia and which implants are used.
- Absolute guarantees of results: "I'll make you perfect" is not medical language.
- Prices far below the usual range, without a clear explanation.
