Double chin liposuction in Barcelona: the shortest double chin surgery
Double chin liposuction (submental liposuction) removes the fat that builds up under the chin through an incision of a few millimetres hidden beneath the chin, and sometimes two more behind the earlobes. It takes 45 to 90 minutes under local anaesthesia or sedation, with no hospital stay, and most patients return to normal life within a few days wearing a compression chin strap.
It is the right double chin surgery when:
- The double chin does not go away even at your normal weight, often because it runs in the family.
- The skin of the neck is still elastic (it will retract once the fat is removed).
- There are no prominent bands of the platysma muscle.
If the skin is loose or there are bands, removing fat can leave the neck looking worse, and the right option is a neck lift. If the chin is small, the double chin looks bigger than it is, so the whole profile is assessed at the consultation. Compared with fat-dissolving injections, which need several sessions and only work for mild double chins, double chin liposuction gives a lasting result in a single procedure.

Risks and complications of double chin liposuction
Every operation carries risks. Most complications are uncommon and can be treated, but you have the right to know them before deciding: they are part of the informed consent you will sign with Dr. Liuzza. For double chin liposuction, the most relevant are:
- Irregularities: small lumps or dips under the chin; the garment and massage help them even out.
- Numbness: of the treated area, almost always temporary.
- Lower lip weakness: from irritation of the marginal branch of the facial nerve; rare and usually temporary.
- Haematoma or seroma: uncommon.
- Asymmetry: may need a touch-up.
- Loose skin: if the skin has little capacity to retract it may stay lax; in those cases a neck lift is considered.
- Infection: uncommon.
How we reduce these risks
A complete pre-operative work-up (blood tests and anaesthetic assessment), surgery in an authorised healthcare centre with an accredited operating theatre, meticulous surgical technique, antibiotic and anti-thrombotic prophylaxis when indicated, clear written instructions and direct follow-up by the surgeon herself at every check-up.
