What does the procedure involve?
Blepharoplasty corrects excess skin on the upper eyelids and/or bags under the lower eyelids to rejuvenate the eye area. The goal is to open up the eyes without changing your facial identity.

Types of blepharoplasty
The indication changes depending on the cause of the tired look. During the consultation we assess skin, fat, eyelid tone, brow position and periocular skin quality to avoid excessive surgery.
- Upper blepharoplasty: removes excess skin from the upper eyelid and opens up the natural crease.
- Lower blepharoplasty: treats bags and laxity of the lower eyelid with an external or transconjunctival approach depending on the case.
- Full blepharoplasty: combines upper and lower eyelids when both contribute to the tired appearance.
- Combined blepharoplasty: can be paired with a facelift, neck lift or skin-quality treatments if the cause is not only in the eyelid.

Eyelid surgery in Barcelona: the most requested cosmetic operation
Blepharoplasty is now the most performed cosmetic operation in the world and, in Spain, the top one among men and people over 45. Its popularity makes sense: a short procedure, usually under local anaesthesia with sedation, changes a tired expression without altering the face.
- Upper eyelid: removes the skin that falls over the lashes and, if needed, a small pocket of fat. The scar sits in the natural crease.
- Lower eyelid: treats bags. If there is no excess skin, it can be done from inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach), with no external scar.
- Hollow under-eyes: sometimes the problem is not excess but lost volume; the fat is repositioned or combined with facial lipofilling.
If it is the eyebrow that has dropped, eyelid surgery alone will not correct it, and this needs to be assessed. And if laxity affects the lower face and neck, it may be combined with a facelift or a neck lift.

Risks and complications of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
Every operation carries risks. Most complications are uncommon and can be treated, but you have the right to know them before deciding: they are part of the informed consent you will sign with Dr. Liuzza. For eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), the most relevant are:
- Haematoma and bruising: common in the first two weeks; a rapidly enlarging haematoma is an emergency and must be reported immediately.
- Dry eye or irritation: gritty feeling and watering in the first weeks; treated with artificial tears.
- Difficulty closing the eye: temporary, due to swelling; in rare cases it persists if too much skin was removed.
- Ectropion: the lower lid pulling away from the eyeball; uncommon and sometimes needs correction.
- Asymmetry: small differences between eyes; may need a touch-up.
- Scars: hidden in the eyelid crease; on the lower lid they can be placed inside (transconjunctival).
- Visual disturbances: temporary blurred vision from ointments or swelling; loss of vision is exceptional.
How we reduce these risks
A complete pre-operative work-up (blood tests and anaesthetic assessment), surgery in an authorised healthcare centre with an accredited operating theatre, meticulous surgical technique, antibiotic and anti-thrombotic prophylaxis when indicated, clear written instructions and direct follow-up by the surgeon herself at every check-up.
