What the Lipedema Unit is and why a single pathway matters
Lipedema is a chronic disorder of the fatty tissue that many patients carry for years without a name, mistaken for obesity, cellulite or fluid retention. When the diagnosis finally arrives, care tends to fragment: one doctor diagnoses, another operates, a physiotherapist talks to neither. The CLA Surgery Lipedema Unit exists to avoid that dispersion.
The pathway starts with a clinical diagnosis: a detailed history, examination by palpation, circumference measurements and a reasoned exclusion of lymphedema and obesity, with further tests only when there is doubt. You leave that visit with a written plan stating the stage, the affected areas and the treatment sequence.
Dr. Claudia Liuzza, a plastic surgeon with 18 years of experience and more than 5,000 operations, coordinates the Unit and personally performs every surgery. When a case calls for it, the plan brings in lymphatic-drainage physiotherapy and nutritional advice from trusted professionals, always under one clinical lead.

Protocol by stage
Not every patient needs surgery, and none needs it on day one. The Unit's protocol adapts treatment to the clinical stage:
What the free first consultation includes
- Full medical history: onset of symptoms, hormonal changes, family history and previous treatments.
- Physical examination with palpation of the affected areas and the cuff sign at ankles and wrists.
- Circumference and weight measurements to establish an objective baseline.
- Clinical photographs, always with your consent, to compare progress.
- Classification of stage (I, II or III) and type according to fat distribution.
- Phased treatment plan, stating whether to start with the conservative route.
- Fixed written quote for each planned surgical session.
- Guidance on compression garments and exercise from day one.
Treatment phases
First visit and written plan
Examination, staging, exclusion of lymphedema and obesity. You leave with a plan and a quote per session.
Conservative preparation
Compression, lymphatic drainage and low-impact exercise. Stable weight, blood tests and pre-anaesthetic consultation if surgery is planned.
First surgical session
WAL or VASER liposuction of the most symptomatic areas. Continuous compression and lymphatic drainage from day three.
Following sessions
Once the previous area has settled, the next block is treated. The total number is set in the plan and reviewed at every check-up.
Follow-up
Check-ups at one week, one month, 3, 6 and 12 months after each session. Compression adjustments and guidance to maintain the result.
Price per phase
Each phase has its own cost and you know it before you start. We do not publish a single figure because the number of sessions and the areas treated differ from one patient to another.
Financing is available to spread the cost of each session; we explain the terms at the consultation itself.
Lipedema clinic in Barcelona: how we work
The Unit's consulting rooms are at Avinguda Diagonal 399, Barcelona, open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm. Surgery takes place in authorised healthcare centres in the city, with accredited operating theatres and the option of an overnight stay.
If you live outside Barcelona, the first assessment can be done by video call: you receive the plan and the written quote before travelling. Dr. Liuzza also operates on lipedema in Madrid, Bilbao, Zaragoza, the Canary Islands, Galicia and Murcia; see the where we operate page to choose the nearest centre.
Risks and complications of lipedema surgery
Liposuction for lipedema is a safe operation when performed by a plastic surgeon in an authorised centre, but it is not risk-free. The most frequent issues are seroma (a fluid collection that may need draining), contour irregularities and prolonged swelling, which in the legs can last several months.
When large volumes are removed, transient anaemia can occur, and as in any operation there is a risk of thrombosis, infection or changes in sensation. Splitting treatment into sessions reduces these risks, which is why more sessions than planned are sometimes needed.
Surgery is not curative: it removes the diseased fat from the treated area and halts progression, but lipedema remains a chronic condition that requires compression, exercise and medical follow-up.
